Bulk products are measured by cubic yard or ton. A cubic yard fills a 3 x 3 x 3 foot cube, and ordering requires translating the area and depth of your project into one of those units. These tools calculate quantities for 24 products using the actual weight assigned to each cubic yard. Shredded mulch comes in at about 600 lb for a yard, while crusher run comes in at 3,000 lb. The cube is identical, yet crusher run weighs five times more, so selecting the calculator for the actual material matters for tonnage.

Calculation method

Start by finding the area, then account for depth to determine volume. Multiply the project length and width in feet, followed by its depth in feet, using inches divided by 12. The result is cubic feet. Divide it by 27 to find cubic yards, then use that material's density to determine tons. This is the full calculation used for quantity estimates.

Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Tons = cubic yards × density (0.3 for mulch, up to 1.55 for riprap)

An accurate area alone is not enough, since depth changes the quantity. A 10 x 10 patio at 2 inches takes half the stone required at 4 inches. If the needed depth is unclear, the material page identifies depths used for its intended projects.

Choosing material for the project

  • For a driveway project or parking area, place crusher run or road base below, then finish with driveway gravel or #57 stone. Figure each layer with its own calculator.
  • Where water remains, such as in a soggy trench or French drain, use clean #57 or drain rock at 12 inches or greater depth.
  • Put shredded mulch in areas with plants. For borders intended to stay in place without refreshing, use river rock.
  • For a bare or sparse lawn, apply 4 to 6 inches of screened topsoil before seeding or laying sod.
  • When filling a hole or building up grade, use fill dirt for the bulk. Reserve topsoil for only the upper 4 to 6 inches.
  • A paver patio needs compacted base beneath exactly 1 inch of bedding sand. Use the Paver Base calculator for one layer and the Paver Sand calculator for the other.
  • For playground fall zones, maintain pea gravel at a depth of 9 to 12 inches.
  • For a washing-out bank or shoreline, install riprap over fabric in layers of 12 inches or more.

Common ordering questions

What calculator do I need?
Choose the calculator tied to the material you plan to order, since material weight is built into each one. If pea gravel and river rock are both options for one path, enter matching dimensions in each calculator. The volume remains unchanged, but the tonnage and price differ.
Should I buy cubic yards or tons?
Follow the unit shown on that product page. Gravel and stone use ton pricing, while soils and mulch use yard pricing. Both quantities appear in every calculator, removing the need to convert them yourself.
How close are calculator estimates?
Calculator formulas are exact, but site conditions vary. Moisture, compaction, and an uneven subgrade can change the amount needed by roughly 10 to 15%, so results are given as a range and crushed products include a small extra allowance by default. Check measurements twice to help remain within that range.
Can one delivery include several materials?
Yes. For base stone and surface gravel, fill dirt and topsoil, or mulch and edging rock, use a separate calculator for each layer and place all products in one order. Delivery remains free.
Are the calculator materials available to order?
Yes, all 24 materials are covered. Each calculated result takes you to its related product page and includes the quantity from the calculation.
