Loose crusher run settles 10-15% when compacted. If you buy only to the measured depth, the finished base can end up half an inch shallow, so this calculator begins with its +10% allowance enabled. It may be called Pit Run, bank run, pit gravel in Wyoming, or 2 inch minus on tickets. Each name refers to crushed stone containing fines, about 3,000 lb per cubic yard, which compacts into a surface that resists tire movement.

Order for finished depth

  1. In feet, record the footprint: multiply lane length and width, or enter the pad size.
  2. Enter the required compacted depth: 4 inches for paths and pavers, 4-6 for driveways, and 6-8 beneath trucks.
  3. Divide cubic feet by 27 for yards, then multiply by 1.5 to get tons. Keep the +10% selected. Depth specifications apply after rolling.
Tons = (Area sq ft × Compacted depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27 × 1.5 × 1.10

Suitable uses and limits

  • Driveway bases need 4-6 inches after compaction, followed by 2-3 inches of #57 or driveway gravel as the travel surface.
  • For economical rural lanes, crusher run can form the driving surface. Plan on dust during summer and regrading at 2-4 year intervals.
  • Paver and slab bases use 4 inches, compacted in 2-inch lifts. The Paver Base Calculator covers the complete paver assembly.
  • Shed and hot-tub pads require 4 inches over stripped ground, or 6 on soft soil.
  • Keep it out of a French drain. The same fines that create a tight bond retain water, while clean #57 or drain rock allows drainage.

Example: a 20 x 10 parking pad

At 4 inches after compaction, Two hundred square feet calculates as 200 x 0.333 = 67 cubic feet = 2.5 cubic yards, or 3.7 tons. Order 4 tons to include the allowance. Place half the material and compact it, then place the remainder and compact a second time. Two 2-inch lifts hold up for years longer than one 4-inch pour, especially where spring melt tests a base. Renting a plate compactor for the afternoon is less costly than repairing the first pothole. By the second delivery, ruts can reveal where compaction was skipped.

Delivery guidance

  • Have base and surface stone delivered together to keep the work moving. Delivery is free either way.
  • Put the load at the distant end of the run, then work back toward the pile. On large pads, spreading downhill saves a full day over uphill work.
  • Lightly mist every lift before rolling it. Damp crusher run compacts more tightly than dry material.
  • Reserve a wheelbarrow-load for later touch-ups, since potholes can develop.

Pricing information

Crusher run is produced during crushing rather than being washed and sorted. On a 4-ton order, the +10% allowance can prevent the need for a second half-ton delivery. Review the Crusher Run product page for the per-ton price, compare Road Base, and order both driveway layers in one free delivery.

Crusher run, Pit Run, bank run, and pit gravel questions

How much crusher run is required for a driveway?
For a lane, calculate the compacted volume at 4-6 inches, convert it using 1.5 tons per yard, then include 10% for placement and compaction. A 50 x 10 ft ranch lane at 4 inches comes to roughly 10 tons delivered.
What does a yard of crusher run weigh?
A cubic yard weighs about 3,000 lb, or 1.5 tons, with slightly more weight after rain. Fines fill the gaps among the stones, making it heavier than clean gravel.
How are crusher run and gravel different?
Unlike screened-clean gravel such as #57, crusher run retains stone dust. That dust lets it compact firmly for bases, while clean stone remains open for drainage and surface use. In a driveway, use them in that order.
Are crush and run and crusher run the same?
Yes. It is a regional naming difference. Pit Run, bank run, pit gravel, and 2 inch minus describe the same material family.
Can crusher run be used as a finished surface?
Yes, for rural drives and areas with low traffic. It compacts into a solid crust suited to changing weather, but dry periods create dust and the surface needs regrading every few years. A later 2 inches of #57 addresses both.
How much will crusher run shrink?
Allow ten to fifteen percent for compaction. A 4-inch loose layer finishes at about 3.5 inches after rolling. For that reason, the calculator starts with the allowance on, and specifications use compacted depth.
