Materials Delivered in Big Horn County
Crushed base is the compacted base for drives, shop and shed pads, parking areas and county-style lanes.
City and county work is usually written against Section 02190 of the Wyoming Public Works Standard Specifications, which uses the same grading letters and states that base shall be crushed base unless otherwise specified.
Choosing the Right Material
Big Horn County sits in the Bighorn Basin, and Park County and Washakie County share the same ground region. The ground is the same across all three.
That ground is the driest in the state, and the lower basin takes only 5 to 8 inches of precipitation in a year. Alkaline and saline silt and clay sit over Cretaceous shale, gypsum and bentonite beds.
Bentonite is the one to watch. It swells when it gets wet and shrinks when it dries, so a base course over it can move.
A clean, open stone like washed rock or 3/4" crushed stone lets water through instead of trapping it.
For a drive or a pad, crushed base is the compacted layer. For paths and walkways, scoria and stone screenings are the choices, and screenings pack down where wind would move loose stone.
Where rounded stone is wanted, Natural Pea Gravel and Wind River Rock cover walkways, play areas and decorative beds. Rounded stone does not lock together, so keep it off structural layers.
Ground Conditions Across Big Horn County
Almost all the water here arrives as snowmelt off the Absarokas, Beartooths and Bighorns, or as irrigation. That means drainage problems come from canal and ditch water, cloudbursts on bare badland clay, and alkaline soils that seal over instead of soaking in.
When the soil seals, water sits on top and works on whatever surfacing is unprotected. A drainage layer of clean stone under the finished surface gives that water somewhere to go.
Wind does the rest of the damage on bare, dry, sparsely vegetated ground, with sheet and gully cutting in badland clay and along irrigation runs. Bank scour on the Bighorn, Greybull and Shoshone at spring high water takes armor rock.
Winters are cold and dry, with far less snow than the mountains around the rim, so bare frozen ground and deep frost are normal. Thaw cycles work directly on unprotected surfacing.
The working season on the warm, low basin floor is comparatively long by Wyoming standards, running from spring breakup well into autumn. On the rim the window is much shorter.
