“Six tons of riprap around a culvert outlet on our property near Sundance where the ditch water had been undercutting the pipe for two years. Heavy angular rock, packed it in around the pipe by hand with a pry bar. No more undercutting after a full season of spring runoff.”

Everything You Need to Know About RipRap
Size and Grading
- Size
- 4 inches to 12 inches and up
- Type
- Large, heavy stone
A contractor uses RipRap at the exposed part of a drainage route, after runoff has been directed toward its outlet or channel. Wyoming snow can melt quickly in spring, while gumbo clay and alkali flats may hold or redirect that water. The material provides large, heavy stone where moving flow can work against unprotected soil.
Along a ranch road or near a crossing, place RipRap on the bank, slope, or channel section that receives the concentrated discharge. It is suited to culvert outlets and shoreline edges as well, where smaller aggregate may wash away. Deep frost and freeze-thaw conditions can leave ground exposed when the melt begins, so keep the protective stone at the active water path.

Customer Reviews
Held up fine, load came in wet
Eight tons of riprap went down for shoreline stabilization on a small pond near Thermopolis. The rock itself does the job, heavy and angular, locked in fine once it was placed.

No more undercutting at the culvert

Low water crossing survives two runoffs
Four tons of riprap for a low water crossing on the ranch by Saratoga. Big and heavy, stays where you put it. Crossing has held through two spring runoffs without washing out.

Stock Tank Overflow Gully Finally Fixed
Cattle had trampled a gully below the stock tank overflow pipe for years, so we brought in six tons of riprap and worked it into the slope by hand with a pry bar in spots the loader couldn't reach. Two good overflow spells later, not one rock has rolled loose.

Stock Pond Bank Stays Put
We have a stock pond west of Rock Springs that kept losing ground on the dam face every time we got a hard runoff. A tri-axle load of riprap, around ten tons, went in along the waterline and up the slope where the geese had grazed the bank bare. The driver backed the truck down our two track and dumped it in three spots so we could spread the rest by hand with the tractor bucket. It has held through one full spring melt and two hard rainstorms without a single new slump. Wyoming Rock Supply quoted less than the pit outside Rawlins and had it here in four days.
