“We used four tons of number four under a culvert crossing on a job site outside Casper where snowmelt kept washing the base out every April. It locks down hard once it's compacted and hasn't shifted through a full spring runoff. Bigger chunks than the fifty seven we usually run, exactly what we needed for a load bearing base on soft ground.”

Ranch roads often meet their worst conditions when wind-packed snow thaws over gumbo clay. #4 Crushed Stone gives a heavy, open course that drains freely and resists shifting under loaded traffic. During the spring melt, that drainage helps prevent water from remaining within a heavily used road foundation.
Across alkali flats or around corral approaches, fast meltwater can leave ground soft before travel starts. Put this material in the supporting course of the road or pad, with a tighter surface material above it where a firm travel finish is needed. Deep frost and repeated freezing and thawing can make wet clay move, so keeping an open supporting course below traffic is useful across the Laramie Plains and Powder River Basin. Its crushed shape helps it resist shifting, and its open structure is also suited to erosion control where runoff cuts across a slope.

Good size rock, dusty on delivery
Ordered three tons for a low spot by the barn outside Sheridan. Good sized rock, packs in nice once the tractor rolls over it.

Stopped the washouts on the lease road
Bought ten tons to shore up a lease road corner out in the Powder River Basin that kept washing out after every gully washer. The stone is big and angular, bites into the clay instead of floating on top like the pit run we tried last year. Two seasons in, no washouts.

Finally a road that holds a truck
Our lease road out past Douglas turns to soup every spring once the snow lets go, and the pickup had been bottoming out in the ruts for two winters. We ordered twenty five tons of the number four and spread it over fabric before the frost boils came back this year. Wyoming Rock Supply had a tri-axle out within three days, and the driver dropped it in three piles along the worst stretch where we walked him through on the phone.

No more rutting behind the duplexes
Fifteen tons for the access lane behind our rental duplexes on the east side of Cheyenne, where the ground stays soggy clear into May. Tenants have driven over it through one full winter now with no rutting.
